Не знаю как справиться с задачей, т.к. опыта в сборке пакетов не имею. Вообщем нужно пропатчить пакет network-manager-openvpn и потом его установить. Зачем все это нужно - в trusty версия пакета такая, что в ней нет опции key-size cipher.
Нашел на просторах сети вот такой патч.

Как его поставить?

Знаю что нужно сначала скачать пакет с исх.

Ставлю собранный пакет в гуе не появляется наличие плагина.

#service network-manager restart

и в логе вижу это:
NetworkManager[19285]: <info> VPN: loaded org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.openvpn
А в гуе его так и нет. Как завести, все вроде собралось правильно...

Ставлю решено! Собрал с нужными префиксами, взлетело:

./configure --sysconfdir=/etc --prefix=/usr --libexecdir=/usr/lib/NetworkManager
