Попробуйте сначала открывать Xnest, и уже в нём менять пользователя

Будем разбиратся с HAL в Xnest, а то он на устройсва ввода ругается.

1. перешел в первую консоль (ctrl+alt+f1).
2. залогинился под другим пользователем.
3. гружу иксы как было сказано:
startx -- :1загрузился почему-то gnome, а не xmonad. тоже вопрос: как сделать чтобы по умолчанию грузился xmonad?

вместо startxmonad у меня надо xmonad, так как при загрузке написал, что startxmonad - нет такого бинарника.

Тогда найдите подходящий бинарник и впишите его в .xinitrc по шаблону exec some_bin:
ls /usr/bin | grep xmonad
