Проблема после закачки обновления

Извините если чего напутаю. Только что перешел с винды на Linux. Умных книжек еще не прочитал.

Поставил Ubuntu 8.04. Все работало.
Периодически загружал обновления через менеджер обновлений.  Но недавно установился особо большой набор обновлений (ок. 50 мег) один из файлов помню был GDM и какие-то библиотеки.
После этого перестал грузиться Гном и, вместо него, грузится BusyBox. Переключившись по Ctr-Alt-F1 я прочитал следующее сообщение:

mount: Mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/4596-410D on /root failed: No such device
mount: Mounting /root on /host failed: Invalid argument
Alert! /host/ubuntu/disks/root.disk does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Это все происходит при автоматической загрузке. Если загрузиться в ядре 2,6,24-16 (по автомату грузится 2,624-17), то Гном нормально грузится и все работает. Все диски присутствуют.

Подскажите, что можно сделать, пожалуйста.

не знаю в чем проблема
если решения не найдется, могу только порекомендовать снести новое ядро, а старое зафиксировать
