xorg.conf не заменяется . ubuntu 9.10

ну проблема у меня с xorg.conf  и ещё проблема что я нуб)

ну случилось это после того как хотел поставить другой драйвер)
ну и безуспешно)
потом нашёл в ~/ xorg.conf.new
где всё чётко прописано.
и вот решил я его заменить.
а нихрена

~$ sudo cp ~/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
[sudo] password for ivan:
cp: невозможно выполнить stat для `/home/ivan/xorg.conf.new': No such file or directory

и как это понимать? и что делать? как заменить-то?  заранее спасибо)

А в чем проблема, что неправильный режим монитора выставлен?
Или в старом xorg'е было что-то важное прописано?

и кажется это то что нужно мне
или как вариант можно просто в консоле открыть xorg.conf и заменить то на это??
а он защищен??
это мне надо как правильно сделать??
из под xterm'a?? а нужно тормозить работу икса?
или как? у меня ubuntu стоит 3 дня) и я пока не очень в ней)

В выводе команды ls вообще отсутствует файл xorg.conf.new - значит, его там нет.
