Может ли быть причиной тот самый xz -e?
-e, --extreme возможность увеличения сжатия за счёт использования длительного процессорного времени, не приводит к изменению требований объёма памяти для извлечения
Раньше проблем не замечал, обычно 5-6 виртуалок крутится...
