не грузится рабочий стол

ubuntu 10.10 (и 10.04), видеокарта geforce fx5500, драйвера nvidia-173 и 173 с сайта нвидии, настроен tv-out (не twinview), удалено pulseaudo, а соответственно и пакет ubuntu-desktop
nautilus при запуске выдаёт:

в Xorg.0.log кладётся:
Warning: Xalloc: requesting unpleasantly large amount of memory: 0 bytes.

nautilus --no-desktop работает
при отключении tv-out (строка     Screen 1  "Screen1" LeftOf "Screen0"   в xorg.conf), начинает работать
началось после очередного обновления ещё в 10.04, обновление до 10.10 спасло ситуацию, пока не начал "играть" с видео драйверами - повторилось
xorg.conf изначально был написан вручную, потом был пересоздан нвидиевской утилитой, не помогло
проблема проявляется во всех пользователях
