Инструкции тыща лет в обед. Не учитывает изменений в 9.10. У меня по ней тоже не грузится. Вот у меня рабочий хорг, сформированный драйвером:

Еще раз перечитал ваше первое сообщение. Kubuntu 8,04, для слабой машины , есть дистры и полегче. Если есть возможность попробуйте как будет вести себя более свежая версия Ubuntu. Возможно там ваших проблем с видео и не возникнет.

Поставил драва через менеджер при каждой перезагрузке надо выставлять параметры заново через nvidia x server settings. В чем проблема? Все сохраняю в xorg.conf.

Добавил Modes   "1280x1024" и разрешение теперь норм определяется а что еще надо прописать чтобы частоту поднять с 54 до 75Ггц???

А вы частоту по чем смотрите? Если через gnome-display-properties, то она там неверно отображается.
Смотрите и настраивайте через nvidia-settings

дело в том что при каждой перезагрузке частота в nvidia-settings сбивается ее приходится заново выставлять!
