Что-то не получается настроить dial-up соединение:

Did you configure it properly with setserial?

Пробовал и gnome-ppp и pppconfig - результат одинаков. Модем не находят. В других линуксоидах программы его находили. Что делать? Прочитал геморрой, связанный со scanModem и Smartlink - ничего не понял, но голова заболела... Есть какая-нибудь прога, которая сама всё настроит или понятная инструкция для настройки дайлапа в Ubuntu?

Видимо Ubuntu не для нигров делалась, а для самых что ни на есть капиталистов, раз дайлап не пашет. Месяц уже тема висит, но, видимо, будет и год висеть, но никто так и не ответит.
Пробовал sudo wvdialconf - он посмотрел несколько портов и нифига не нашёл. Можно его настроить, чтобы смотрел что надо, а не то, что ему взбредёт?

а по поводу модемов которые работают под linux вам в поиск.
сам пробовал ради спортивного интереса d-link завелся usrobotiks нет.

Ну так я устанавливал разные ОС на базе ядра Линукс и на всех модем работал. А Ubuntu более криво делалась что-ли? Нет - просто, видимо, надо настраивать и заявы вроде "нифига с этим модемом не работает" не принимаются.

Когда-то сам мучался с этим диалапом. Если ну очень уж нужно, и есть немного лишних денег, то лучше приобрести аппаратный модем, подключаемый к компьютеру не по usb (ибо не все поддерживаются), а через com-порт. В этом случае будет работать без проблем (скорее всего). Это я говорю из своего опыта. Если на компьютере нет com-порта (для десктопа это маловероятно, а вот в ноутах он чаще всего остутствует), можно недорого приобрести адаптер USB-COM.
А внутренние модемы, которые чаще всего являются win-модемами, заставить работать довольно сложно, нужно искать драйвера, которые не на все модели существуют, к сожалению. Увы, но Linux с софт-модемами не дружит.  
Можно (нужно?) заглянуть на http://www.linmodems.org/, ну и в Google, понятное дело.

По крайней мере из обсуждения проблемы можно видеть в каком направлении рыл автор, и каковы были советы. Далее все в ваших руках. Найти упомянутый драйвер, поставить и настроить. Как то так. Удачи.

Доброго здоровья, прошу ответить на парочку вопросов по диал-апу...

- на сайте linuxant.com крайние версии драйверов только на 9.04, где искать драйвера на 10.04? плюс к тому и ядро только 2.6.31-17.
- и как может повлиять на определение модема то, что система находится в состоянии live-USB?

10.04 использую из-за того что видео работает практически идеально, и переустанавить на настраиваемый ноут другую систему не могу, гарантия мешает.

На линуксант смотря какие драйвера, и там же есть инструкция по компиляции.
Я ставил, компилял, но без факса мне они нахрен не сдались.
